We are...

Equestrians preserving and

improving access to trails

and public lands

Our History

Alberta Backcountry Horsemen (ABH) is a provincial organization of equestrians dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of access to and activities within the public lands and publicly accessible private lands in the province of Alberta.

In late January 2024, a handful of dedicated backcountry enthusiasts launched ‘Alberta Backcountry Horsemen’ on Facebook. The Group soon grew to 3,000 followers. After considerable volunteer effort, the Interim Board of Directors were proud to receive notification that we were approved as a Provincial Society on April 9, 2024.

ABH is an ever growing group of horse enthusiasts who love exploring the backcountry of Alberta. We are concerned about lost access to trails and public land that's becoming increasingly limited while equestrian campgrounds are being opened up to other user types.

By joining forces, we can represent the diverse backcountry areas of our beautiful province and advocate for the interests of equestrian user groups. We decided that it's time to take action and come together as a unified voice to address the challenges backcountry horse enthusiasts are facing.

Going forward, our efforts will be modelled after the highly successful initiatives and membership protocols established by other Backcountry Horsemen Associations in British Columbia and across the USA.
